  2. Retired from lifetime of writing and looking to keep a hand in with like-minded people.

    • Wonderful! We could use your advice. The one thing I feel we could use more of in our group is writers with more experience. I’ve been writing seriously for 15 years but I’d love to learn from someone who’s at the next level of knowledge. I’d also love to add you to our ‘local authors’ area of the website. My email is if you’d like to send your bio and photo.

  3. I would like to join your group and will try to come to the meeting at the coffee shop this Saturday. March 8. 2014. I look forward to hearing from you

  4. I’d like to get to know some fellow/sister writers in this area. I’ve recently moved back here after living elsewhere for 40+ years. I’ve published one book and now write commercially to pay the bills, but I’m working on a bit of fiction just for fun.

  5. I don’t understand at all how I live in Athens this long and arduous I would really like to be contacted by a member of your group and would like to attend next meeting meeting

  6. I’m a long-time Harriette Austin writer!! And would love to be part of this

  7. Hi Kathleen, I may be interested in joining your group. I have 4 published business books and recently released my first mystery published by MuseItUp Publishing. I’d love to showcase that book on your site.

  8. I would like to come to the Write-In March 23rd. I am a novice writer, looking to learn the craft.

    • Hi Fred,
We’d love to have you! I’ll be the one there with really long hair and a probably a Best Buy shirt. Write-ins tend to focus on each person working on their own piece, though of course I’d love to meet and talk to you. We also have a get together on Sun, the 29th (see our upcoming events section) which is a very good place to meet more writers and get all your questions answered — I hope to see you at both events! Best wishes, Katherine Cerulean, Founder.

  9. Katherine

I am interested in joining and getting to know more writers in the Athens, Clarke, Oconee and surrounding area. My first Harriette Austin class was: MURDER AND MAYHEM FOR MONEY in the late Summer or Fall of 1997. Then since I have attended the HAWC conferences up through the last one in 2011. Currently have been attending the Wednesday OCAF Writers Group since a year ago Spring.

Published work non-fiction: articles, newsletters, a few books and co-authored some.

Currently writing an autobiography book about 30 days in Hell.

    • Hi!

Our association has just about every kind of creative writing — poetry, screen- and playwriting, non fiction and every type of fiction writing. We also have two flourishing critique groups, and have done public readings and three self-published collections of members’ writing.

The membership in the AWA is free and is comprised of an elite group of authors who have — asked to join. 😉

We have an informal meeting the last Sun. of each month — be sure to check out our free page —
As well as the ‘Upcoming Events’ page of the Athens Writers Association website.

We’d love get to know you better. Everything slowed down a little during the crazy holiday season (I work retail!) but we should have more events as the new year starts. And whenever you’re ready, I’d also love to add you to our ‘local authors’ section of the AWA website.

      Hope to meet you soon!

      Best wishes,

  10. Self-published author of the spiritual children’s book, My Forgotten Self. Pre-released at the Decatur Book Festival to great reviews (sold all 100 copies…yay!). Book will be officially released February 13, 2016. Looking forward to connecting with other writers in the Athens area! I have two other manuscripts that I’ve started and accountability, feedback, and fellowship are appreciated!

    • Hi Lynyetta,

We’d love to have you in the group! The holidays are kind of a slow season for us but things will get busier again in the new year. Be sure to join our Facebook page and our page ( if you’d like to stay up-to-date on our events. We’ve had a lot of ‘Write-ins’ this month for NaNoWriMo and we have a writers gathering this Sunday — if you get a chance, you should come. They are a lot of fun and a good way to stay energized about writing during this hectic time.
Let me know if you have any questions!

  11. Me Me Me!!! I want to join in!! I’m “escaping” GA for Oconee County Spring Break, but I’ll be back soon and I want to be involved!
We met today at your Fantasy Writing Class (if Katherine is the one moderating this). Looking forward to getting to know you better.

(I have/had an OLD WordPress account, but communication from other people’s WordPress pages keep defaulting to it. FB is my preferred communication method, but I also use email, have a website, and am the proud owner of a sadly neglected blog.)

    • Love your enthusiasm — we need more of it in the world! Email is a good way to reach me and I’d love to hear/help you execute any ideas you have for the group. It’s exciting to have you on board!

  12. Jeanne Sanderson

Would love to join this group. Reformed technical writer here. Working on my first novel.

    • Hi Jeanne,
Welcome to the AWA! Summer’s a bit of a quiet time around here, but I hope to see you at one of our end-of-the-month get togethers! And always feel free to post your own events on our meetup page (found under the ‘Upcoming Events’ page of the website). And don’t hesitate to email me if you have writing questions — I love newbies. Good luck on your novel!

  13. Jennifer Mitchell

I would love to join the group! I just moved to Athens from Tampa and want to get involved. I’ve had a few things published and want to learn more and share also.

    Thank you!

    • Welcome, Jennifer! Katherine will the be one to officially respond, but I saw your post and wanted to welcome you right away!!

    • Hi Jennifer! You’ve come to the write place (haha? haha?) Sorry — puns will be kept to a minimum. Check out the ‘Upcoming Events’ section of the website (or visit our Meetup.cpm page — and hopefully you can come to one of our end of the month ‘gathering’s — we’d love to meet you, hear more about your work, and hear any ideas you have for the group. This Sunday’s meeting will also have a free drawing for 15 pages of professional copy editing. Hope to meet you soon — and hope you’re enjoying Athens!

  14. Hey all, my name is Trevor Bachman. I sent an email to Katherine already, but I would love to become involved with the Athens Writers Association. I’m the content guy at a marketing firm in downtown Athens, so I’m always writing something, but it’s almost always business or industry-related and I really want to get back into my passion of creative writing. I don’t have anything published and I lost a lot of my stuff when my old computer broke, but I think this sort of group could really help me get back on the right track. I’m happy to help out any way I can, and I look forward to writing with you.

    • Hi Trevor,
I sent you an email! We always love new writers. And I’ve found that the surest way to want to write more is to talk to other writers. I’ve never left a meeting or a class without a desire to speed home and write for hours! Hope to meet you soon.

    • Welcome — you’re in! Check out our ‘Getting Started’ and ‘Upcoming Events’ sections and hopefully you can come to the ‘Lickskillet’ festival or come to our end of the month gathering! We can’t wait to meet you and learn more about your writing. Best wishes, Katherine Cerulean, founder

  15. I look forward to meeting you and others on 29 January. Thank you for making this opportunity. For now, until the 29th, please Count Me In.

  16. I’m a student at the University of Georgia studying English and would love to join.

  17. Hi! I am Hannah and I am a writer studying Communications at UGA who would love to join. 🙂

    • Hi Hannah — welcome! Membership is inclusive and free so you’re in! Check out the ‘getting started’ link at the top of the home page and you’ll find our link. From there, you can join us for ‘write ins’, ‘read ins’ or even a singles mixer! And consider coming to our monthly meeting on Feb. 26th at 4:00 pm at Jittery Joes, Epps Bridge, (details on Meetup) to hang out and talk writing with us. Let me know if you have any questions.

  18. Katherine since you this coming Sunday at Jittery Joe’s

  19. amandaonelittlelife

Wow. Imagine what you find when you start looking! I am waking up to my dream of writing, and I would love to join.
